Learning how to make icons
Published on January 8, 2005 By DefpenguinZ In Community
Well, I've just gotten started on skinning and am having a lot of fun! Not bad for a guy who can only draw stick figures by hand; computers make the job so much easier. I think that I've figured out (for the most part) the gel/glass icon technique although it isn't quite up to par with a professional skill level.

Anyway, what I'm going to try and figure out next is how to make some decent 3D icons; icons with more than just texture. I'm having a little bit of trouble in this department because I can't seem to get the angles right (no pun intended) and have trouble learning how to use my SVG software (illustrator) I'll probably find another option in the open source or freeware market to get things started. Although I'm not sure how I'm going to do it.

After I've done this (assuming I can get it done) I'll move on to the "big one", skinning a desktop for WindowBlinds.

What are you skinning now?

Well I haven't really figured that part out yet. It might be to simply (or not so simply) make a variation on one of my current icons or icon sets. Like I said, I'm really new at this and kinda playing it by ear and learning as I go.
